Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben has launched a swift defence against allegations that he spat on Bacary Sagna during last night's 2-0 win over Arsenal at the Emirates, insisting that the video footage merely shows sweat dripping from his head.
Robben sent social media into a frenzy following the Champions League last 16 clash after appearing to kneel down and send saliva in Sagna's direction while the Frenchman was down injured, on what was a very busy night for the Dutch international.
With video footage of the incident far from clear German tabloid Bild asked Robben for clarification yesterday and were given short shrift, told by the wing wizard that he wouldn't bother coming home if found guilty of such a horrible offence.
Robben is quoted by Bild's Bayern Munich Twitter account as declaring: "It was sweat that dripped from my head.
"If I had spit I wouldn't have bothered coming home."
The 30-year-old had a decisive impact in last night's match, drawing fury from Arsenal fans and Arsene Wenger after going down in the penalty area under contact from Gunners stopper Wojciech Szczesny.
Arsenal were reduced to 10 men following that clash and Bayern took full advantage despite missing the resulting spot kick, with Toni Kroos and Thomas Muller both scoring in the second half to put the Champions League holders in complete control of the tie.
